We are very pleased to offer a real piece of Classic Mini history, one that I have been excited to list and I also know is virtually unique with a fascinating story. The Mini “617MOM” was registered new in May 1964 by Neville Jeffrey who worked for Austin at Longbridge, he qualified for the works employer discount scheme and the supporting original sales invoice confirms that he paid the sum of £443 and 15 shillings. He also optioned the Super De Luxe spec complete with Porcelain green trim. After a few months he passed the Mini onto his son Edward who after a few years of using it as his daily transport decided to use it for Saloon Car racing. He was lucky enough to work for the right company and manged to not only fully convert it into a racer but also managed to fit it with an engine developed by Daniel Richmond of Downton engineering fame. It has an experimental A series block, which is briefly a thin wall S block with no tappet chest side covers which became the forerunner for the later A+ engine. Assembled by Special Tuning and known as an “XSP” experimental block, they were also fitted to Sebring Sprites in period and this particular well known Mini is featured on that website. The Mini was campaigned until the early seventies and then dry stored for over forty years and has such remained untouched offers a real insight that amazing Saloon Car Racing era and must be more or less unique. It is accompanied with lots of important paperwork from the era including invoices from Downton, Patrick Motors and Les Leston and a corresponding Heritage certificate. To this day it is still only a three owner Mini. Its last owner has cared for it for ten years and used it regularly.
What you do get is an absolutely amazing driving experience. The 1293 “XSP” which stands for Experimental, engine features a 648 cam, Weber 45DCOE carb, KARB twin neck inlet manifold, 25D4 distributor with S points, S radiator and 13 row oil cooler. The power is put down by a Jack Knight LSD gearbox with a 3:0 diff, S shafts, race clutch and a remote linkage. It has dry suspension with Armstrong Road holder dampers, S discs, Dunlop D1 alloys and Dunlop Green Spot tyres. The wonderful thing about this Mini as it is at was in the early seventies. It has been recommissioned, serviced and tuned and has a new Maniflow large bore exhaust system. As you can imagine it sounds amazing and has a oodles of power and is very eager to keep on pulling right through the rev band, this is a quick focussed Mini that whilst being road legal would be very much at home racing around Goodwood or tackling any speed trial or hill climb. We have prepared many Minis and this stands out as particularly quick and I would easily estimate around 110BHP.
The Mini has a very solid shell and has its original floor pans and sills. For racing purposes it gained a GRP quick release boot lid and a Guy Performance Fibreglass front. It has a huge amount of patina and is really unrepeatable in this condition and would certainly draw crowds at any event as it has so much history and amazing looks.
The interior is fully functional race car, period race seats with Kangol Harnesses with invoice from 1968. Basic and functional dash with a shift light and a period roll cage. The original seats are also available. Just when you thought it could not get any better it also comes with its original trailer supplied by Don Parker Trailers with matching invoice.
The Mini offers its lucky new owner a real piece of Classic Mini history that has been wonderfully preserved and is also ready to be used and enjoyed and to carry on this amazing Minis story.
